Core modules

ENBS542
Project Management and Professional Practice 20 credits

This module combines the examination of project management process and practice together with the essential requirements of both operating as a professional, and operating in, a professional environment. The module focuses on embedding knowledge and understanding issues faced by modern construction professionals in delivering construction projects in a professional and ethical manner.

100% Coursework

ENGR503
Computer Aided Engineering 20 credits

You will develop a fundamental understanding of numerical simulation techniques for use in engineering design and analysis. Emphasis is placed on the importance of rigorous interpretation of verified methods in computer-aided engineering (CAE), with a focus on finite element analysis (FEA) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD), applied to complex engineering problems.

100% Coursework

Sustainable Engineering Scheme Design 20 credits

This module immerses learners in a real-world interdisciplinary design project, tackling interconnected challenges in Civil and Coastal Engineering. Working in managed teams, students will refine sustainable solutions and present progress in simulated design meetings. The project spans the full lifecycle from concept to construction, equipping students with collaborative problem-solving skills.

100% Coursework

HYFM505
Flood Risk and Modelling 20 credits

This module explores the hydraulic engineering principles that shape computational flood modelling and river flood risk management. You will critically assess key techniques used in civil engineering for flood prediction and mitigation, with a strong focus on reliability assessment. Learning is hands-on, featuring reading groups, industry-standard software applications and a flood defence field trip.

100% Coursework

PROJ518
MSc Dissertation and Research Skills 60 credits

This module enables students to undertake an independent research project, applying the knowledge and skills developed throughout their MSc studies. Under academic supervision, students will apply appropriate methodologies, carry out in-depth analysis, and present their findings in a well-structured dissertation that demonstrates critical thinking, technical ability, and academic rigour.

100% Coursework

STAD507
Advanced Structural Engineering 20 credits

This module develops a deeper understanding of structural dynamics and its role in real-world engineering. Students explore how structures respond to dynamic loads such as wind and earthquakes, and learn to design for complex loading scenarios using advanced analysis techniques.

50% Coursework

50% Examinations

Optional modules

GEES528
Soil and Rock Mechanics, Characterisation and Field Skills 20 credits

This module covers the principles of soil and rock mechanics. How soil and rock behave under loading and what are the main parameters to characterize those behaviours. Laboratory testing is used to give an insight on the basic principle of soil and rock strength and how these are determined. Ground investigation techniques used to assess soil and rock characteristics are also described and demonstrated in the field.

50% Practicals

50% Remotely delivered assessments

GEES532
Geohazards and the Built Environment 20 credits

This module will introduce geohazards and their impacts, exploring how to assess, monitor and mitigate them. Students undertake an assessment of a natural geohazard and produce a professional report on that assessment with a proposal for remediation. They will also learn about anthropogenic hazards and develop skills in public communication of these issues, via a practice based assessment.
